When 8GB is enough

Eight gigabytes can still be enough for a student who spends most of the day in a browser, word processor, presentation software, learning-management system, streaming app, and occasional video call – especially when those tasks are not all running heavily at the same time.

The tradeoff is headroom. A modern browser with many tabs, a video meeting, cloud sync, messaging, and several desktop applications can consume memory quickly. When the system runs short, it relies more heavily on storage for virtual memory, which can make multitasking feel less responsive.

Eight gigabytes therefore makes the most sense when the laptop is inexpensive, the workload is light, and the savings are meaningful. It is less attractive when the machine is expensive enough that you expect to keep it for four or more years.

Why 16GB is the best default for most students

Sixteen gigabytes gives most students enough room to keep a browser, documents, communication apps, music, research tools, and class-specific software open together without constantly managing memory.

It also aligns with the direction of current mainstream laptops. Apple’s 2026 MacBook Air starts at 16GB unified memory. Lenovo’s current IdeaPad Slim 3x Snapdragon configurations include 16GB. Microsoft offers 16GB Surface Laptop 13 configurations and explicitly positions 16GB as the better choice for smoother multitasking and more demanding apps.

The point is not that 16GB is a magic number. It is that the price difference between 8GB and 16GB is often easier to justify than the frustration of buying a non-upgradable laptop that is already close to its memory limit.

Who should consider 24GB or 32GB?

More memory becomes useful when the workload itself is memory-heavy. Examples include:

  • Running one or more local virtual machines
  • Large software-development environments or containers

Unified memory on Mac vs. RAM on Windows

Apple uses the term unified memory because the CPU, GPU, and other parts of the chip share a common memory pool. Windows laptops typically describe system memory as RAM, though integrated graphics may also use part of that memory.

That architectural difference matters for performance characteristics, but it does not make capacity irrelevant. An 8GB Mac does not become equivalent to a 16GB PC simply because Apple calls the memory unified. Compare the workload, software, and total memory pressure rather than assuming the labels map perfectly across platforms.

Can you upgrade RAM later?

Often, no. Memory is soldered in many thin laptops, including current MacBooks and many ultraportable Windows systems. That makes the purchase configuration more important because a future memory upgrade may be impossible.

If you are buying a laptop with replaceable or upgradeable memory, verify the manufacturer’s supported capacity and whether opening the machine affects warranty or service options. Do not assume upgradeability based on older versions of the same product line.
